George Frideric Handel
City of Athens Symphony Orchestra & Athens Chamber Choir
In May 2023, the International Handel Festival in Göttingen, Germany, presented a tribute to Greek mythology called “Hellas!” The City of Athens and the Olympia Theatre collaborated with the International Handel Festival on the production of a new musical drama “Semele”, with the festival’s artistic director, Giorgos Petrou, conducting and directing it. The story is based on Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” and is characterized by the composer as a “cosmic oratorio”. It narrates the story of Semele, a mortal with whom Zeus falls in love. The opera premiere took place in Göttingen before moving to the Olympia Theatre, where it will be staged in a highly entertaining direction that highlights the plot’s comic and dramatic elements. The key roles are performed by leading singers specializing in old music, including the Swiss soprano Marie Lys, a new star in the baroque scene.
