JULY & SEPTEMBER 2022 | AB SUMMER CINEMA

This year, the Municipality of Athens also lights up the historic venue at AnoPatissia, reviving the neighborhood.

JULY & SEPTEMBER 2022 | AB SUMMER CINEMA

The Municipality of Athens, true to its vision, lights up one of the most historic cinemas of Athens, for the second year, in the framework of Culture is Athens. The enthusiastic response of the citizens, Athenians and non-Athenians alike, last summer led to the decision not only to operate the venue again this year but use it exclusively as a cinema. So, the AB Summer Cinema will screen July and September a variety of films for all ages in an effort to cover the taste of all cinema lovers!

The Technopolis City of Athens, in collaboration with the Athens Open Air Film Festival, the Athens International Children’s Film FestivalCinoboTrianon Cinema and In-edit Greece, presents in 33 nights 31 memorable films, with unique tributesre-releases of favorite movies and a long-awaited premiere on July 13. The program will kick off on Friday, July 1, with the Athens Open Air Film Festival and the 60th anniversary of the first screening of Lolita, Stanley Kubrick’s beloved and talked-about film. Admission for the public will be free.

For July, there will be a weekend dedicated to youngsters, with the first feature film dubbed by the Athens Children’s Film Festival, The Ape Star, an incredible, animated tender story based on the bestseller by Frida Nilsson. A story about family ties that do not always imply blood relations, unconditional love and the true meaning of motherhood. Cinobo will pick up the baton with the Italian Classics special and three great films directed by two masters of world cinema. Federico Fellini, with his early masterpiece I Vitelloni and his “eternal” Dolce Vita (in a restored print from Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation) and Michelangelo Antonioni with Red Desert, will make sure that we will be dazzled once again, as is always the case with them. The program includes a tribute to Vangelis Papathanasiou, one of the greatest Greek music composers and electronic music pioneers, who passed away last May. Technopolishonours him with The Chariots of Fire screeningdirected by Hugh Hudson and Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott. From Trianon to AB comes the Cinema On the Round Moons tribute, with screenings of Happening, a sensational film that won the admiration of audiences and critics last year, directed by Audrey Dewan,Ooops 2! The adventure continues…a children’s animated film arriving just days after its premiere and after the great success of its first film, followed by this year’s AB premiere, The Worst Girl in the World, directed by Joachim Trier. The film mesmerized the viewers at the 27th Premiere Nights, talking about the world’s most mysterious thing: love.

In July, cinematic journeys will continue with three special screenings curated by Technopolis, which include unique films not to be missed, completing the first part of this year’s rich AB program. First, on the venue’s big screen, we will watch the wonderful On The Road tribute with the original Compartment Number 6, directed by Yoho Kuosmanen,Minari, directed by Lee Isaac Chung and Monadland, directed by Chloe Jao. The Chiaroscuro film selection is next, with High Fidelity, directed by Stephen Friars, C’mon C’mon, directed by Mike Mills, A Plein Temps, directed by Eric Gravel and Before Sunset, directed by Richard Linklater. The final screenings will include Thrillers in the Dark like Only the Animals, directed by DominikMol, May God Save Us, directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and Memories of Murder, directed by Bong Joon-Ho, films that surprised and impressed their fans.

From this summer onwards, the AB Summer Cinema is back, giving us a taste of what will follow in the coming years. Culture and its people will always find a way, and we will have the opportunity to revisit AB, just like before!
