44| Koula Lili (1923-1943)

A student at the French Academy and a member of E.P.O.N., Koula Lili was murdered by the Nazis on July 22, 1943, on Panepistimiou Street during a massive demonstration in central Athens against the expansion of Bulgarian occupation in Macedonia.

In that moment, a tank at the Bank of Greece ran over a heroic Greek girl, Panagiota Stathopoulou, who died shouting for a free Greece. Overwhelmed by the hatred that surged through her pure soul, Koula climbed onto the tank and struck a German soldier. The bullets from the fascists silenced her forever.
