It could be an anniversary concert or a birthday concert. It could be the 40th anniversary of Manos Loizos’ last farewell this year or the 35th anniversary of Athens 9.84 and free radio broadcasting. It could be, but it isn’t. It is a concert – a celebration of the continuity of Greek songs, of the feeling that passes like a baton from one artistic generation to the next, of the songs that count half a century of life, that have their place in our memory, in our heart, of the songs that are still omnipresent, that have written and continue to write their own history.
The Manos Loizos – META project that will be released on the day of the concert is, in essence, the result of an artistic movement that gathered more than 35 artists of the younger generations around Manos Loizos’ work. If we kept a map with lights on for every studio or house or rehearsal room where these arrangements were being prepared, we would have the image of memory illuminating this country and this continent from Athens to Corfu and from Thessaloniki to London.
As tricky as this project was to perform on a record, it is even more challenging to present it live. But it will be presented on the birthday of the Athens Municipal Station, Athina 9. 84, which 35 years ago paved the way for what we take for granted today, but which was not the case back then, Free Radio Broadcasting.
Thirty younger generation artists will be on stage to sing Manos Loizos’ songs, a composer who has been loved like too few others in the history of Greek singing. To mark the continuity of Greek music, they will be joined by two of the first female singers of Manos Loizos’ songs, DemetraGalani and Maria Farantouri.
It could be a concert, but in reality, it is an artistic movement that goes out on the street, the street that always has its own history.
