Christoph Willibald Gluck’s masterpiece “Iphigenia in Tauris” is presented in a new production, an excellent cast of distinguished opera singers, under the direction of George Petrou. With Thanos Papaconstantinou’s fresh perspective, the sets and costumes of Niki Psychogiou, the ancient myth will come to life on the Olympia stage through Gluck’s intensely dramatic music, which eloquently captures the particular psyche of the drama characters.
An exotic location, a lost sister, a mad brother, human sacrifice, suspense, danger, and divine intervention: all the key features of a fascinating ancient Greek drama. Gluck’s opera Iphigenia in Tauris, based on Euripides’ tragedy of the same name, narrates the intersection and end of Iphigenia and Oreste’s myths.
