The exhibition resulted following an open invitation by the City of Athens earlier this summer toartists, architects, graphic designers and creatives to imagine their cities in the future.
It will run until the end of Novemberand is supported by the United Nations Regional Information Centre and the Eurocities network. It functions as an open archive, documenting debates, exchanges and interventions to produce a printed version at the end.
The exhibitionhosts 42 original works by Greek and foreign artists, selected by a committee of experts in visual arts, graphic design and architecture. They are hypothetical, descriptive, exploratory, critical and reflective proposals. Some of them depict a dystopian urban future due to the constant shrinkage of public space, mass urbanisation and social exclusion. Others take a more realistic approach, tackling more practical needs such as accessibility and sustainability. Finally, some proposals look to the city as the predominant realm of the commons, promoting freedom of expression, multiculturalism and the solidarity of community life.
The City of Athens gives voice to creators who envision, are optimistic or concern for the future of urban centres. In that way, it listens to trends, demonstrates problems and presents proposals to improve city living conditions and protect the environment and social cohesion.
