On September 29, 1944, following a minor incident involving teenage ELAS fighters at the intersection of Kifissos and the old Kavala road, the Germans executed 44 individuals. Eight of them were collected by their relatives, while the remaining 36 were buried in the courtyard of the Church of Saint Spyridon at the Powder Factory, near the execution site.<\/p>\n
On March 8, 1945, the remains were transferred to the Third Cemetery and interred in a mass grave, without any identifying details. Today, the commemorative plaque lists the names of 27 of those individuals.<\/p>\n
The “cleansing” of the area was completed when the Germans trapped the male residents over the age of 15 in their homes and burned them alive.<\/p>\n
In 2010, the Municipality of Aigaleo erected a monument in the square of the Third Cemetery to commemorate all the victims of the “Aigaleo Massacre” against civilians and unarmed citizens, a number that approached 100.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
