From September 8 to 26, at the Open Air Theatre of Colonus<\/strong>, famous artists will share their work with the residents and visitors to the city, presenting a series of exceptional theatre performances and concerts, part of a rich program curated by the City of Athens Culture, Sports and Youth Organization (OPANDA).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the successful summer program “All Athens is a stage” <\/strong>of the Municipality of Athens, also implemented by OPANDA, which actively supported artists and cultural workers, in the framework of Culture is Athens, <\/strong>OPANDA is organizing this autumn a new series of cultural event, inviting different audiences and artists at the Open Air Theatre of Colonus, in the framework of its broader effort to disseminate <\/strong>culture and offer entertainment, enhancing thus the quality of life in the city’s neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“With consistency, plan and imagination, we are trying our best to turn Athens into a capital of culture, a destination of creativity and cooperation! We offer entertainment and fun to all age groups in the city’s neighbourhoods while supporting the artists to continue creating and sharing their work with their audience. We need both!” <\/em>stated the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President of the Organisation, Niki Arabatzi, <\/strong>stated: ‘The Colonus Festival is back, with numerous performances and concerts, in an extraordinary neighbourhood of Athens and a wonderful theatre, highly esteemed by the residents and everyone in Attica. This September, the Festival will signal our return to the city, our farewell to the summer with a great cultural feast. We look forward to welcoming autumn together with 19 days full of art, culture, music and joy.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Festival starts on Thursday, September 8, <\/strong>with a contemporary Greek fantasy novel “Xuth the Ape” <\/strong>by Iakovos Pitsipios, staged for the first time, under the direction of Rubini Moschochoriti<\/strong>, while the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy more exceptional summer productions with excellent reviews. The Festival will also host ‘Thesmophoriazusae<\/strong>‘ or Women at the Thesmophoria<\/strong><\/em> with Giannis Bezos<\/strong>, Vladimiros Kyriakidis <\/strong>and Fotini Baxevani<\/strong>, and “The Imaginary Patient” <\/strong>directed by Kostas Gakis, with Thanasis Tsaltampasis <\/strong>in the leading role along with Nikoletta Vlavianou <\/strong>and Nikos Orfanos<\/strong>. Furthermore, one of the most important representatives of the younger generation of actresses, Maria Petevi <\/strong>as Iphigenia, together with Lazaros Georgakopoulos, Ioanna Pappa, Akis Sakellariou <\/strong>and Georgios Chrysostomou, <\/strong>hold the leading roles in Euripides’ “Iphigenia in Aulis” <\/strong>directed by Themis Mumoulidis. Finally, “Prometheus Bound” by Aeschylus, <\/strong>directed by Aris Biniaris, will also be presented with an excellent cast, including, among others, Yannis Stankoglou, Alekos Sissovitis <\/strong>and Ioannis Papazisis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Open Air Theatre of Colonus<\/strong> is also a meeting point for Greek musicians and singers who will bid farewell to the summer. Penny Baltatzi, <\/strong>accompanied by the Athens Big Band<\/strong>, Christos Nikolopoulos <\/strong>with Pitsa Papadopoulou <\/strong>and Stelios Dionysiou<\/strong>, Dimitris Basis<\/strong>, Christos Papadopoulos <\/strong>together with Lambros Karelas<\/strong>, Giorgos Sarris, Thodoris Papadopoulos <\/strong>and Vasilis Kordatos<\/strong>, as well as the Athens Municipality Symphony Orchestra<\/strong> and Choir<\/strong>, weave a fabric full of  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

extraordinary music, transforming our autumn evenings into atmospheric, unique, enjoyable, musical experiences. Furthermore, the Colonus Festival commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe with memorable performances. “The Refugee” <\/strong>directed by Emilia Ypsilanti<\/strong>, “Despina of… Nobody’s” <\/strong>directed by Nikoleta Vlavianou<\/strong>, “Angela Papazoglou” <\/strong>directed by Lambros Liavas and Anna Vagena<\/strong>, “The Ten Day Diary – Aivali 1922″<\/strong> <\/strong>directed by Mania Papadimitriou <\/strong>and the music performance “Smyrna’s Minore” <\/strong>with Grigoris Valtinos <\/strong>as the narrator, will bring memories to life, talking about our unforgotten homelands. The tribute to Smyrna and the refugees includes two concerts: “Ah! Anatoli” <\/strong>with Petros Gaitanos <\/strong>and Nadia Karagiannis <\/strong>and “With the sun as our neighbour and our sorrows in our heart” <\/strong>with Manolis Mitsia<\/strong>, Myrto Vassiliou<\/strong>, Thanos Matzilis <\/strong>and Eleanna Varela.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
