A Journey to Old Athens

“A Journey to Old Athens” is a permanent exhibition covering 185 square metres, created in 1996 in collaboration with the Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive Society (ELIA). The exhibition was inaugurated in 1998 as a living museum that attempts to capture Athens’s daily life through a historical journey from the end of the 19th century to the interwar period.

It represents a life-size Athenian neighborhood consisting of 8 traditional shops (a clothes shop, a photo shop, a barbershop, a pharmacy, a grocery store, a printing shop and a tobacconist’s). The houses are replicas of actual houses of Athens in the early 20th century, while an effort was made to represent the “neighborhood” as lively and vivid as possible. Almost all objects displayed are original: the clothes, the hats, the printing and photographic machines, the vases, the medicines, etc.
