The Technopolis City of Athens, in cooperation with the Greek Association of people living with HIV – Positive Voice and the Hellenic Society for the Study and Control of AIDS (EEMAA), organize, on Sunday, November 27, at 19.30 the event “Because we have to. The importance of prevention in the treatment of HIV” at the INNOVATHENS building at Technopolis.
In September, the amendment tabled in Parliament by the Ministry of Health establishing the availability of the HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis PrEP was voted through. PrEP is a treatment that provides pre-exposure prophylaxis. People who start this treatment take a pill daily or before and after sexual intercourse to remain HIV-negative. The treatment’s effectiveness is close to 99%, which means that the potential for sexual transmission of HIV is prevented. The treatment is the closest thing we have to an HIV vaccine since it adequately shields the body against the virus.
The discussion aims to highlight the importance of prevention in the treatment of HIV and provide information on HIV prophylaxis, which will now be available in Greece as the most potent weapon in the treatment of HIV/AIDS.
The participants include Nikos Dedes, Founder & President of the Greek Association of people living with HIV – Positive Voice, Marios K. Lazanas, Pathologist – Infectious Disease Specialist, Head of the Internal Medicine-Infectious Diseases and Travel Medicine Department at IASO General Clinic & President of the Hellenic Society for the Study and Control of AIDS (EEMAA), Irini Agapidaki, Secretary General of Public Health, Manolis Kalambokas, Deputy Mayor of Public Health and Municipal Clinics and Mena Psychogiou, Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases Pathology – National Kapodistrian University of Athens. Journalist Kostas Giannakidis will be the moderator.
The event will be addressed by the Minister of Health, Thanos Plevris, the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, and the President of the Technopolis City of Athens, Konstantinos Dedes.
A few days before World AIDS Day (December 1), we will discuss the importance of regular screening, prevention, sexual health promotion, HPV vaccination and PrEP in an open, informed and inclusive discussion.
The event takes place under the auspices of the City of Athens.
*The event will be live-streamed through Technopolis’ YouTube page.
