Rumble Fish by Francis Ford Coppola (1983)
The story’s setting is Tulsa, but it’s instead an out-of-place and time one. Rusty James, portrayed by Matt Dillon in a role that resembles a young Marlon Brando, grows up in his brother Motorcycle Boy’s shadow (played by the dashing Mickey Rourke in his best performance ever). Motorcycle Boy was once the leader of the gangs and returns after many years to leave his mark in a desperate act and to reconcile with their estranged father, Dennis Hopper. Based on Susan Hinton’s novel, Francis Ford Coppola creates a modern “ancient tragedy,” depicting two brothers and two generations fighting over a non-existent “kingdom” while discovering their bonds. The film is a beautiful tribute to fleeting youth and a masterful meditation on the passage of time and the impermanence of human existence. Stuart Copland from The Police created an incredible soundtrack, and Stephen Burum’s stunning black-and-white photography adds to the eerie, dreamlike atmosphere. Lefteris Adamidis
